Acting

At a young age, I used my imagination as a refuge from a tumultuous home life. Although I had a pronounced stutter and was shyer than shy, I recruited neighborhood kids to perform in the plays and skits I wrote, creating the proverbial basement productions of every budding thespian. Of course, I acted in these productions that mostly featured both physical and situational comedy.

Right down the street from my house was an even better venue: a glorious historic old Opera House. I would squeeze in through the costume room window and spend countless hours on stage in the empty theatre creating characters and moments. Acting became a safe place to be – although it was a world where anything could happen, my ability to be express myself existed no where else. From there, as I grew older I dared to audition for shows at the Opera House. After many, many years in the chorus, I started earning leads in many familiar musicals.

I love creating roles and wearing them as if my own skin. I feel my overwhelming vulnerability – which is not so handy in day-to-day life – is a wonderful tool for the stage. It allows deep connection and real possibility when living another's life. Although directing has taken me away from performing, I plan to get back on the boards soon. Acting is an essential element missing from my current life. I look forward to exercising that skill and making it stronger.
