Directing

After years on the stage, a good friend asked me about directing a musical. It was something I had never considered before. To me, acting was being alive. I felt compelled to inhabit roles and be part of story telling. Initially, and quite erroneously, directing showed up for me as a non-engaging position, more about management, than artistic expression. The one time I worked backstage as a stage manager, I spent the majority of my experience bemoaning the fact I was be hind the scene, not in the scene. I tried to hide my poor theatre sportsmanship, but was so miserable not being on the stage. So when the possibility of directing came along, I was skeptical – but interested. What drew me towards the challenge was the concept that I could create a vision and then work towards manifesting that vision on stage.

My directorial debut was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It was a life changing experience. It caused me to think and look at theatre in a fundamentally different way. Suddenly the entire stage was the canvas – not just one character. I respected and looked forward to the responsibility of shaping a powerful experience for an entire audience night after night. Directing brought more possibility and influence to my creative journey. I eagerly became a student of the craft and continue to develop and discover with each production.
